Posted by My son loves collecting different items on our walks. He started collecting rocks on one occasion and I took this opportunity to encourage counting. He counted up to 20 and noticed the different size rocks as well. Other activities that can be derived from this is sorting rocks by size and/or exploring the different textures. It is interesting how many teaching opportunities can arise from simply collecting rocks. It is important to allow yourself to be open minded when a child does something where your first concern might be that they will get dirty. There will be many occasions where that will be the case and they will get dirty but in the process they will experience hands on learning in a way that will create a love of learning.
